Water Features

Water features are a new and exciting trend in decorative concrete. They may include something as simple as a small waterfall or stream running through a yard. They can be created for both indoor and outdoor usage and can be subtle or the focal point of the landscape or room.

Water features capture the essence of nature and bring it to your home. The peaceful sounds of a waterfall, a lazy stream running through your home or yard, or cascading into your pool or pond. You can even relax and rejuvenate your senses as your lay on a river bed with water running all around you, caressing your body and relaxing your mind.

As with many construction projects, the design process of water features is one of the most critical parts, as you don't want to fail to include something, only to wish you had later. This is often a result of not knowing about the techniques and products that are available and most importantly, knowing how they all fit together. Above and beyond the actual concrete or stone work, you have the pumps, lighting and many other things that need to be incorporated into the concrete and stone work.

Take a little time to research various publications that discuss water features, so you can decide which features you like and don't like. Keep in mind that the physical shape and color of the design should be only one aspect of the overall project. The above ground and underwater lighting can add a dramatic effect to the water features. The sounds that the water makes as it splashes against the rocks adds another layer of depth. You can use these features in unison to create a very realistic and natural environment. When looking online or through the publications, take notice not only to the design, but look at the lighting and how it effects the overall impact of the project. You may want to incorporate some of these features into your design.

Consideration should also be given to how strong of a statement you want the water features to make. This is both from a physical size, to the sounds that it makes. If it is to large in size, it might look out of place, and if it is too small, it may not be noticed. The same thoughts apply to the sounds that it makes. A big waterfall in your home might be nice to look at but you may have little control over the sound that it makes.

Regardless to whether your water features are inside or out, you will need to have some sort of filtration system. If you have a waterfall running into a pool, the pool filtration system should be sufficient, however it you just have a waterfall or a stream running through your yard, you will need some type of filtration. A selection of chemicals and filters is usually the solution, but be careful on the selection of chemicals. There are some that are designed specifically for indoor use.
